For centuries the skies have amazed us. What’s out there? Are we the only ones here? How significant are we? We look up and wonder. Astronomy allows us to gain insight into some of these questions. The NIHERST Astronomy Programme is focused on promoting the study of astronomy and related fields, both in-house at the National Science Centre and at outreach activities. Join us as we unroll a slew of events designed to enhance understanding of the universe and our existence.

A number of Astronomy Nights are scheduled during the year. Individuals and groups can book in advance to attend. On the night of the viewing, there is a total astronomy programme, which includes among other things, a planetarium show and (weather allowing) the opportunity to view the night sky through one of the most powerful telescopes in the region with state of the art GPS equipment.

Groups with a particular interest in astronomy can also call in and speak with a Science Educator about formulating special programmes and viewings.

What can you expect at Astronomy Night?

At Astronomy Nights, visitors can step into the AstroZone to enjoy various activities and demonstrations that explore the physical universe, space, celestial bodies and highlight special missions and research developments. AstroZone activities combine innovation, science, technology, engineering and mathematics and are meant to stimulate public awareness of what’s out there and what we have learned from observing the skies and space exploration.

Once the weather permits, visitors will have the opportunity to peek through our Meade and Celestron telescopes and observe the live night sky. Android users, before coming you can download the Google Sky Map app on your smart-phones and tablets; this is a great tool to discover and explore the wonders in our sky!

Of course our Planetarium is also available throughout the night where you can view a show on the ceiling dome and interact with our new astronomy exhibits.

Other areas of the Centre will also be open for you to learn about and explore fields outside of astronomy. These include Raging Planet, The Human Body, Road Safety and more

In addition to Astronomy Night, be sure to look out for more Astronomy projects offered by NIHERST throughout the year. These include workshops, seminars, short courses, public lectures and collaborations with international space agencies such as NASA.
