Analysis of Academic Performance

The National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST), is conducting a survey of national importance titled "Analysis of Low Academic Performance of Students across Primary and Secondary Schools in Trinidad and Tobago.”

This study is being undertaken with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Tobago House of Assembly - Division of Education, Research and Technology, and other key partners.

The project aims to identify the factors contributing to low academic performance among primary and secondary students, with the objective of informing the development of policies and programmes to address critical challenges within the education system.

We are collecting valuable insights from principals, teachers, students, parents, guidance counsellors, school supervisors, school social workers, jobseekers, educational specialists, denominational boards and other key stakeholders.

The objectives of the study are:
  • Assess the impact of governance and administration on academic outcomes
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum
  • Investigate pedagogical practices and their influence on performance
  • Examine social, cultural, and health factors affecting students
  • Analyse teacher knowledge, training, and attitudes
  • Evaluate the availability and application of educational resources
  • Explore students' perceptions and attitudes toward learning
  • Assess the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on academic performance
  • Investigate key issues such as school drop-out and brain drain
  • Provide actionable recommendations for improvement

Data collection for this study is being conducted during the period in March to July 2025.
