Creativity and Innovation
Camps, 2010
NIHERST conducted a tracer study of its annual
July/August Creativity & innovations camps in
March, 2010. These camps are designed to engage and develop young
minds within the field of science and technology and to develop the
creative and innovative capabilities of youngsters.

Survey on the Utilisation of Information Technology by Households, 2009
National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. Port of Spain: NIHERST, June 2010. 69 pThis survey is the second
of its kind to be conducted by NIHERST as a similar study was undertaken in
2001. The survey was designed to provide empirical data on the penetration
of information technology in private households in Trinidad and Tobago and
has generated essential indicators for comparison with similar studies.
The enquiry focussed on the distribution and growth of computers in
households by administrative areas over the period, 2001 - 2009. Data on the
demographic and socio-economic characteristics of computer users,
information on a wide range of computer usage and on Internet access and
service providers were also captured and included in this publication. These
indicators on computer applications and the profile of users in households
should assist researchers, decision-makers and educators in the Information
Technology sector.

Institutions, 2008

Survey of Environmental Awareness and Practices, 2008
National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and

The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding
of the population's knowledge, behaviour and practices with respect to the
environment. The enquiry focuses on concerns about the eco-system and
biodiversity, the consumption and conservation of water, waste disposal
practices, transportation decisions, and pesticide and fertilizer use. In
addition, information is provided on the key social characteristics of
respondents, their level of interest and sources of information about the
environment. The study provides a benchmark against which changes in public
knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards the environment can be monitored
over time. The results can also inform the development of conservation and
communication policies on the environment.

Mathematics in Primary Schools, 2007. The Survey of Mathematics in Primary

of public and private primary schools. Its major objectives were to compile
data on the profile of teachers, their training needs, difficulties
encountered in teaching mathematics and their perceptions of the subject.

The Survey of Mathematics in Secondary Schools, 2006 was a
two-part enquiry of teachers and students in Forms 1 to 4 in all government,
government-assisted and private secondary schools. The major objectives of
this study were to compile data on the profile of secondary school teachers,
training needs, choice of career and difficulties encountered in teaching
mathematics. The adequacy and availability of teaching aids and textbooks,
teaching and evaluation methods and students’ attitudes towards mathematics
and mathematical careers were also addressed in the enquiry.

are included. The tabulations on graduates with tertiary level qualification
provide essential data on the supply of human resource personnel in the
various fields of S&T.

NIHERST has released the report on the Survey on the
Public Perception of Science, 2005. This survey was designed to determine
the information needs of the public and provide indicators of public
attitudes towards science and included data on the level of scientific
awareness and literacy; the sources, interest and consumption of information
and the popularisation of science and scientific research in Trinidad and
Tobago. In addition, information was obtained on several key social
characteristics of respondents. The study also provides a benchmark against
which changes in attitudes to science can be monitored over time.
