YAPOLLO (an Amerindian word meaning to “discover”) is one of the principal components of the NIHERST Science Popularisation initiative. This travelling science exhibition forms part of a wider Science and Technology Popularisation System which from its inception aimed to “awaken scientific consciousness among the general population and make our people…more scientifically literate.” YAPOLLO has found phenomenal success from its launch in July 1990 to
the present. Whether at malls, auditoriums or outdoor activities, YAPOLLO engenders in both young and old, a sense of wonder and discovery.
Today, YAPOLLO continues to travel both locally and regionally. Between 1999 and 2000, YAPOLLO, with the financial assistance of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), visited six (6) Caribbean territories including Antigua, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Guyana, Barbados and Grenada. In 2003, in collaboration with the Government of the British Virgin Islands,
YAPOLLO made its presence felt in Tortola, attracting approximately six percent of the island's total population.
Locally, apart from participating in annual events such as the KIND KidsFest and the Emancipation Celebrations, YAPOLLO visits various communities and schools. The year 2003 saw the commencement of the
NIHERST Community
Science Weeks, which is aimed at communities
whose access to the offerings of the National Science Centre is limited by
geographical constraints. And wherever there is a Community Science Week,
you are sure to see Yapollo.
So come experience YAPOLLO!! OBSERVE, INVESTIGATE, THINK, LEARN. And it’s all in an environment of FUN & EXCITEMENT.
