Science Whizz 2012

The annual NIHERST/NGC Science Whizz Competition is here once again!  The aim of the competition is to encourage the public, and students in particular, to become more interested in science. The competition also seeks to develop skills in comprehension, presentation and showmanship.

Preview of Science Whizz 2012 Tasks

As with the 2010 competition, we have three exciting categories:

“Illustrate” – Drama is used to enhance the understanding of abstract scientific and mathematical concepts. Students are required to select and research any concept within the field of science and mathematics, and then prepare performances to illustrate the concepts chosen. For presentations, students at the junior level are required to stay within 7 – 10 minutes; students at the senior level, 10 – 15 minutes.

“Innovate” – Students at the junior level must build a bridge span from ONE sheet of standard 8½ x 11 inch computer paper that can support the weight of one dollar or more. What’s the catch? One dollar in the form of one hundred cents! Students at the senior level will be challenged with the more dexterous activity of building a wind turbine and designing a multi-blade rotor (two or three blades) that produces the most energy at a certain wind speed.

“Investigate” – Students at both levels will be required to investigate the growth of crystals and determine the temperature conditions best suited for such. In particular, students at the junior level must pay attention to the size of the crystals since this demonstrates how well the investigation was conducted. Students at the senior level must also investigate the purity of the crystals in addition to growing large crystals.
