Christmas is for Children

“Christmas is for Children’, the old saying goes, and it was indeed a day for children at the NIHERST/NGC National Science Centre’s on Saturday 15th December 2007. The date marked the last day of the Science Club’s meetings for the year.

Science Club Members

Junior Club members were given a taste of creativity from the NSC demonstrators. They provided hairdressing service to “Old St. Nick”, dressing up his moustache, beard and hat, and crafted a snowman out of styrofoam plates to create attractive decorations for the Christmas tree. Putting an active spin on things, they each made a glittery “Jitter Critter” Christmas toy.

With heightened excitement, the children went on a treasure hunt within the Go Creative and Aquatic World areas. Some were faster than others at finding clues hidden below the caimans’ tank, inside the virtual reality zone and among Christmas decorations and earned themselves tasty rewards. Club members feasted on a tasty Christmas lunch then enjoyed a movie.

Club members, staff and invited guests came together to enjoy a potpourri of exciting performances in the TechKno Theatre. Senior Club members took to the stage for a choral-speaking presentation of “Christmas Tief” adapted from the piece by Mr. Paul Keens-Douglas. They gave the tale of “ah fella in ah kind ah red costume, sittin’ down on someting dat look like ah donkey cart, with some little, little donkey in front” that was mistaken for a thief trying to get into the unfortunate narrator’s house. After this, another member, Michelle Bullen, entertained with the classic, “Silent Night”.

Science Showman, Alwyn Gordon next provided the NSC’s brand of ‘edu-tainment’. Illustrating the concept of gaseous pressure, he helped two audience members launch mini rockets, using Alka-Seltzer tablets and water. Then, demonstrating the forces of gravity and friction, he amazed the audience with a “Stupid Egg Trick”, using eggs, vitamin canisters, wine glasses and a tablemat. How did he do it? You need to visit the NSC and see for yourself!

Neon Puppets

Derek Downer and the Inter-Caribbean Children’s Ministry performed with neon-coloured puppets to ‘blacklight’ in the second half of the show. Centered on the nativity theme, the group reminded the audience of ‘the reason for the season’. In an entertaining but mind-provoking skit, a screaming-green puppet named George, with a slew of friends and some sing-along favorites, presented the Christmas message. A closing dance sequence captivated the audience with its dramatic movement and emotion.

The show was well-received, judging from the satisfied faces of the audience. Hearty congratulations go out to the Science Club members for their display of talent. If you did not get a chance to see them in action, come to “Christmas at the Science Centre” next year. From all of us at the NIHERST/NGC National Science Centre, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2008!
