Science Club
What’s cooking in the NSC Science Club?

Ecological expeditions in the grass, investigations of
sound and learning about the senses – all these and more made up the wealth
of hands-on experiences of Science Club members over the 2009/2010 academic
year. The young science stars are always busy at work, exploring science as
individuals and teams in their Saturday morning club sessions.
Last term, the Science Club members were up to their
elbows in the Solar System, kicking off the Club’s activities in a
celebration of World Space Week. The fun kept rolling on, as members got
into gear for a super “Christmas at the Science
Centre” pageant in December.
The NSC Science Club started in January 2001 and was
initially intended for children 11 to 15 years. However, from the first
meeting, members were accompanied by their younger siblings. The club has
since grown from 35 to 85 active members. Its main aims are to:
-
foster and improve members’ understanding of Science and
Technology; and
-
provide the Centre with ready access to a pool of young,
talented individuals who add value to the various activities that the Centre
offers.
Science Club meetings are held for two hours on the
second and fourth Saturdays of each month during the school term. . The club
now comprises four age groups ranging in age from 9 years to 16 years.
The Science Club attempts to achieve the objectives of the Ministry of
Education’s Science Syllabi with fun and interactive workshops.
Themes already addressed this year included: “Amazing
Magnets”, “Exploring the 5 Senses”, “Day and Night Cycles”, “Our Local
Biodiversity”, “Investigating Sound”, and “Organ Systems”. At the end of the
semester, a re-cap of topics in the form of a grand ‘jeopardy’-styled game
show involved all members. It’s always a fun time with the Science Club!
Limited space is available for students between the ages
of 11 and 15 years. Come join the club and have a fun experience with
science!
