Science Club
The NSC Science Club aims to:
-
foster and improve members’ understanding of Science and
Technology; and
-
provide the Centre with ready access to a pool of young,
talented individuals who add value to the various activities that the Centre
offers.
The Science Club started in January 2001 and was
initially intended for children 11+ years. However, the members enjoyed the
activities so much that they felt it should be shared and soon brought along
their younger siblings. The club has since grown from 35 to 80 members.
Science Club meetings resumed in January 2006 on the
second and fourth Saturdays of the month for two hours. In addition to the
regular under 12 years and 12 years-15 years age groups, a CXC science based
group was piloted.
The Science Club attempts to marry the objectives of the
Ministry of Education’s Science Syllabi with fun and interactive workshops.
For SciTechKnoFest 2006 - The Environment Our Space , Our
Place “ , the under 12s performed both the round and figure of eight dances
that honey bees do in their search for food.
The 12-15 year olds performed the play - ‘So it is
important’ - which explored the choices of subjects at CXC, with particular
reference to Science.
After SciTechKnoFest, Mr Derek Downer trained the Science
Club members in the art of puppetry. The older members performed a
delightful black light puppet show at
Christmas at the Science Centre, while
the younger members performed with sock puppets they made.
Events like these provide an opportunity for members to
showcase their talents and achievements and help to build self-confidence
and a spirit of camaraderie among youngsters.
For meeting dates, continue to check the
NSC schedule of activities.
