Robotics Club

To programme and serve

The Robomania Lab was launched at the National Science Centre in 2000. It was initially used to conduct one-day workshops and camps at the National Science Centre and at primary and secondary schools throughout the country. In 2006, the NIHERST Innovations and Inventions Unit took charge of the Lab which then became part of the daily rotation of visitors through the National Science Centre.

The Lab has expanded its services to provide one-week camps to teenagers during the vacation period. It also conducts fun activities in robotics for birthday parties held at the National Science Centre and is now opened on weekends to the public.

Consistent with Government’s vision of achieving developed nation status by 2020, the National Science Centre has extended its offerings in informal science education and in particular the development of creative and innovative skills. Efforts are also focused on a “synergistic thrust to make Education and Science and Technology (S&T) more relevant and accessible”. The recently launched Robomania Club is a key vehicle for making the latest technology, innovations and inventions in the field of robotics accessible to the general public.

The Club provides members with ongoing non-formal education in robotics through which they can:

  • acquire basic skills in robotics programming software;

  • learn and understand the various features and capabilities of robots e.g. robotic sensing and locomotion principles; and

  • acquire mechanical skills in building robots.

Project List

Robotic Kits

Building, designing and programming robots using mainly three different robotics kits. These are the older RCX Lego kits, the upgraded NXT Lego kits and the VEX kits.

Activity Creations

The members of the Robotics Club can take up the challenge of devising new activities to test their creativity in areas such as obstacle course design and various robotic tasks.

Competitions

Members also have the opportunity of entering competitions under the Club’s name once they have shown mastery of the programming software

All Access

Club members also enjoy the privilege of visiting the science center at any time during its opening hours. You simply use your club membership cards for identification when visiting.

Regular Updates

Club meetings are held bi-monthly and they allow members to discuss future activities of the Club, provide suggestions on how to better its operations, and give ideas on developing new robots.

The site is important because two of the main kits used in the NIHERST Robotics Club are sourced from this site. The NXT and RCX kits can be upgraded and examples of possible robotic combinations are given.

The site provides a guide to using the parallax circuit boards. There are download programs for the boards which can be used to control servo motors. It is basically a bread board that can incorporate many other electronic components such as resistors and capacitors.

The site can be used to find further information on the newly introduced Vex Robotics Kits.
