Scholarships for MSc in Climate Change and Development at University of Sussex, UK

The University of Sussex would like to invite applications for the MSc in 'Climate Change and Development' for entry in September 2012. Scholarship information is provided below.

This is a unique course that aims to provide state-of-the-art training for the rapidly expanding market for development professionals with specialisation in climate change. The programme is strongly multidisciplinary. Students will acquire specialist knowledge of the causes and consequences of climate change, the implications for developing countries, and the policy and practice of efforts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate. Courses are taught by leading researchers in these fields from the world renowned Institute for Development Studies (IDS), the Geography Department and Science and Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU).

Scholarships

Up to ten partial scholarships of £3,000 are available. The scholarships will be awarded to students who possess the highest academic ability and potential (not made on the basis of financial need). The deadline for scholarship applications is 1st May 2012.

JOINT NAM S&T CENTRE - ZMT BREMEN (GERMANY) FELLOWSHIP IN TROPICAL COASTAL MARINE ECOLOGY AND BIOGEOCHEMISTRY: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2012

The Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre; www.namstct.org) is pleased to invite applications from suitable candidates for the Joint NAM S&T Centre - ZMT Bremen (Germany) Fellowship in Tropical Coastal Marine Ecology and Biogeochemistry for the year 2012.

This Fellowship scheme was initiated in January 2008 for affiliation of the scientists from the developing countries with the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), Bremen, Germany [www.zmt-bremen.de] for a period of up to 3 months to work with its senior researchers and faculty members for upgrading research skills and undertaking short-term joint research projects in the fields related to Ecology and Biogeochemistry of Tropical Coastal Marine Systems. Depending on the research topic, the Fellows can also benefit from the ZMT’s association with the Marine Science Institute of Bremen University, Max Plank Institute for Marine Microbiology and the MARUM Research Centre in Bremen.

Under this scheme, the NAM S&T Centre sponsors up to five scientists in a given calendar year, of which only one scientist can be from any given developing country. The Centre covers the international airfare of the Fellows from its member countries, but applications from those developing countries, which are still not the member of the NAM S&T Centre, are also welcome subject to certain conditions. ZMT provides a monthly subsistence allowance of 1000 Euros to meet the accommodation and other expenses in Bremen.

Applications recommended by the parent institutions of the applicants may be submitted to the NAM S&T Centre by email in the relevant format.

The last date for submitting application for the Fellowship is 30th April 2012.

The selection will be made strictly based on the professional details of the applicant, plan of work to be carried out and mutual research interests of the applicant and ZMT. CONNECTING AFRICA & ASIA: ICT Policy Research and Practice for the Global South
5-7 September 2012, Mauritius

Organized by Research ICT Africa, LIRNEasia and the University of Mauritius
Supported by the International Development Research Centre, Canada (IDRC) and the Department for International Development, UK (DFI D)

Communication Policy Research south (CPRsouth) intends to build human capacity in the South by reinforcing and developing the knowledge, skills, and commitment of ICT policy and regulation scholars in the region or with substantial interest in the region. The overall objective is to create policy intellectuals capable of informed and effective intervention in ICT policy and regulatory processes in specific country contexts.

CPRafrica 2012 / CPRsouth7 provide a forum for mid-career and junior scholars to meet face-to-face to exchange ideas, network and improve the quality of their scholarly work. It fosters the next generation of active scholars and in-situ experts capable of contributing to good ICT-related policy and regulation in the region.

Location
Mauritius is a dynamic African nation, known as a hub for financial services and attracting many high-spe n ding tourists. A majority of its citizens are of Asian origin. The conference will be held in Port Louis, Mauritius. The city is surrounded by a beautiful mountain range and it still conserves many of its historical and colonial style buildings. Port Louis is the largest city of the country and the main port, which borders the Indian Ocean. From September to November it’s typically the dry season.

Content
The conference will accommodate ~30 paper presenters from Africa and the Asia-Pacific over the course of three days (Asia-Pacific papers will make up around 40 percent of total). The conference includes sessions on cutting-edge developments on policy and regulation in the South and discussion of the research-policy interface. The audience will be made up of 70+ scholars on ICT policy and practice. Each of the paper sessions will be chaired by a senior scholar. Substantive discussant comments from another senior scholar will be provided.

Mentoring
Paper presenters will have opportunity to be mentored on their paper, policy brief and the presentation prior to the conference.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Abstracts for papers on ICT policy and regulation research carried out in the Asia Pacific or relevant to the Asia -Pacific may be submitted for review and acceptance. The abstracts must be classifiable with at least three keywords from the list below (if you have trouble doing so, it is an indication that your work may not fit this conference). The keywords will be used to assign papers to reviewers in a double-blind process which will yield a short list of approximately 30-35. Completed papers based on the shortlisted abstracts will be judged by two senior scholars and the highest ranked three papers in each session will be invited to present at the conference.

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts should be submitted electronically at www.cprsouth.org on or before 16 February 2012 and must contain the following:
a.   500-word abstract of the paper, including a minimum of three and a maximum of five keywords from the list given above. Include at least three, but preferably more, references to prior work. The references and keywords are outside the 500-word limit.
b.   Curriculum vitae (one page)

The document must be named CPRsouth7_Abstract&Bio_YourLastName.doc. It should be in MS office word format. Please note that the abstract and bio must be in a single document.

Notification of shortlisting of abstracts will be emailed on or before 16 March 2012, and authors will be given nearly two months to submit their completed papers – i.e., full papers have to be submitted for final review by 08 May 2012. Only full papers of acceptable quality that are received by the deadline will be considered for partial travel and accommodation support. It is expected that the papers will be polished and improved based on substantive comments provided in the run-up to the conference. All paper givers are required to develop a policy brief based on the final research paper. Mentoring on writing a policy brief and presentation coaching will be provided prior to the conference. The final presentation will be on the policy brief. Policy briefs will be distributed to attendees and will be judged in a new best policy-brief competition.

Paper presenters who make the cut will be notified by 05 June 2012 with contact information for the assigned chair and discussant and instructions on travel arrangements.

Review Criteria
Abstracts will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

1. Clarity of the thesis or the research finding
2. Novelty, significance, and importance to the CPRsouth community
3. Adequacy of methods
4. Quality of writing
5. Appropriateness of interpretations

Please note: Only the authors whose papers that are delivered by the 08 May 2012 deadline AND who meet the quality standard will be allowed to present their policy brief at the conference.

The papers selected for presentation at the CPRsouth Conference will be uploaded onto the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) database. Therefore please note that the submission of the final paper implies consent to upload them onto the SSRN database. The slides of the presentations and the policy brief will be uploaded onto the www.cprsouth.org

Funding
Selected paper givers will be provided with:

• Airfare
Lowest-cost economy airfare to Port Louis from within the Asia Pacific (less USD 200 registration fee) for a paper-giver who is a citizen of a country with per capita GDP lower than Malaysia
OR
50 percent of lowest-cost economy airfare to Port Louis from within the Asia Pacific (less USD 200 registration fee) will be reimbursed for a paper-giver who is a citizen of a country with per capita GDP equal to or higher than Malaysia

Paper givers residing outside the Asia Pacific are ineligible for travel funding.

• Twin sharing accommodation and meals for the duration of the conference (5-7 September 2012).

The airfare will be reimbursed less USD 200, the registration fee for the conference.

The cost of transportation to and from airports in home and conference countries, visa fees (if any) and incidental costs have to borne by the participants.

Visas
Visas are required to enter Mauritius, with some exceptions. Letters will be provided for this purpose after participant selections have been made. Participants are strongly advised to initiate visa approval procedures immediately thereafter.
