ITEC 2000 – Information Technology in Education Conference
ITEC 2000 – the Information Technology in Education Conference- built on the successful National Information Technology Symposium hosted by the Information Technology Professional Society (ITPS) in May 1996. This symposium served to sensitise the national community to the need to develop the country’s information technology infrastructure, and to its importance as a foundation for the way forward in the millennium. ITEC 2000 went deeper, to examine the challenges that the educational sector must address, as it sought to keep abreast with the rapid technological advances of the 21st century. The Conference also built on the successful experience of Telesphere ’99 and the Technology in Education Conference 2000, hosted by Jamaica and Barbados, respectively.
Over the three-day period, issues that related to the effective application of information technology (IT) in the classroom were examined. These included Teacher-Student Empowerment, Curriculum Innovation, Distance Education and Educational Technology. More than 230 educators from throughout Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean gathered to learn of, and to discuss the wide-ranging experiences of countries and institutions that have integrated computers into the school curriculum.
The Conference was beneficial in exposing participants to local, regional and international experiences in applying both information and communications technology in the classroom. Innovative uses of information and technology in education –in programme delivery, teacher training, the motivation of students at risk, and educational administration, among other areas – were highlighted. The impact that the incorporation of these techniques has had on the respective institutions, and on society at large, was examined.
Planning issues for the effective use of new technologies in the classroom were discussed, as well as larger economic and social developmental issues. For example, the success factors for effectively applying IT in education at the systematic and institutional levels were examined, as well as performance by gender in IT in the CXC examinations. Furthermore, the Conference provided an opportunity for sober reflections on the shortcomings of IT in the educational setting.
